Primary Collections: The College’s archive is one of the most important resources for the history of medicine and medical education in Ireland. The collections can be divided into two main areas.
College Records – the records of the College dating back to the foundation of the College in the seventeenth century and continuing to the present day. These include the Royal Charter, minute books, accounts, registers of Fellows, Members and Licentiates, correspondence and papers relating to the management of the Sir Patrick Dun’s Trust and estates in County Waterford.
Donated collections – these are records of other medical organisations or individuals donated to the College for safe keeping. These include the records of Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital, Saint Ultan’s Hospital, Cork Street Fever Hospital, the Royal National Hospital for Consumption and the Westmoreland Lock Hospital. The personal papers of Sir Dominic Corrigan, Dr Kathleen Lynn, Dr John Fleetwood and Dr T P C Kirkpatrick. The archives of the Medical and Philosophical Society, Apothecaries Hall of Ireland, the Dublin Sanitary Association, the National Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis, the Cow Pock Institution, the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland and the British Medical Dublin, Dublin Branch.
The archive also contains the Kirkpatrick Index of Irish medical practitioners, which gives biographical details of over 10,000 Irish doctors from c.1650 to c.1950.
Dun’s Library holds an extensive range of medical texts and history of medicine textbooks from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, which complements the archive material. The Heritage Centre all holds an extensive collection of portraits, antique medical instruments.
