Designs for Manorhamilton Union Workhouse, George Wilkinson Architect, 1840. Archival Code: 85/138.47 Irish Architectural Archive

Note from Maria Edgeworth (author), Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford. Archival Code: P1/17 Longford County Archives Service
Importance of the document: Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849) is a major figure in the history of English literature, and her novel Castle Rackrent (published in 1800) is often called the first 'regional novel'. While living in her ancestral home, Edgeworthstown House, during the Great Famine, she played an important part in the relief effort in the locality. When she wrote this note, Maria Edgeworth was aged eighty years. Even then, she was a person of remarkable energy and determination, and the brevity of the note, and her use of abbreviations, suggest urgency.
